This weekend marked the return of the Bobcats' A driver Tom Holmberg '13 to the water, and he had the team fired up to compete. Tom was joined in A division by star freshman John Cappetta. In B division Edward Moan '14 and Katlyn Flynn '15 were reunited in the boat for the first time since the fall season. Sam Wells '15 was in attendance as a much-needed relief crew.
Saturday's conditions were harsh: A division began in 35 degree temperatures with winds gusting to 25 knots. The Bobcats had a slow start, and had a few early races that put them ten points back of Providence and Wesleyan after two sets. By the fourth set Bates was the only team that could challenge for one of the top two qualifying spots, but would need to win the day on Sunday to advance. After Moan and Flynn won their last race on Saturday, Tom finished with an impressive two point set to end the day.
On Sunday, conditions were more manageable, and competitors had only three sets left to finish the regatta. In A division Holmberg and Cappetta sailed another two point set, and the Bobcats impressively won six of the last ten races in the regatta. Unfortunately, the Bobcats' great sailing was too little too late and finished roughly ten points out of second place. Full scores here.
Special thanks to Tess Dempsey for hosting the Bobcats in Newport. Congratulations to our friends at Providence and Wesleyan, and good luck next weekend at Champs! Thank you to Diana and the UNH squad that ran the event, and to Salve for hosting. Big thanks to Mike Horn for coaching this spring!
